I read this book when I had just moved to Florida and found the observations of Orlean extremely insightful of this strange state. I enjoyed the adventures of the real life historic Orchid hunters, and the flurry of popularity and danger a simple flower could insight.
But orchids are not simple flowers, nor are those who covet them. Most helpful negative review. Average rating: 2 out of 5 stars, based on reviews. I found this book to be overrated and disappointing. As another reviewer pointed out, it was more like a very long magazine article than a book. Orlean threw in a lot of information about orchids, orchid hunters, orchid obsessives etc.
The paragraphs were way too long and run-on as well. Even though I didn't really enjoy reading it, it is did increase my knowledge or orchids. Average rating: 4 out of 5 stars, based on 0 reviews.
